Score of a Sculpture’ is a question driven by the role of material in artistic creation and the often- overlooked importance of the development of tools, wood, canvas, and technology. The use of plywood is representative of the prominence of material in our world and the importance of a sense of self within creativity. In utilizing sound alongside sculpture, this work attempts to bridge the gap between building material and creativity, represented by colorful soundscapes reflective of my practice.
The piece pulled inspiration and perspective from various artists, contributing to my realization and approach to this work. This collage of works and practices is a broad introduction to what contributed to my work's initial planning and inspiration. Questions around a sense of self and the convolution of religion due to technology; TV Buddha (1974) by Nam June Paik. Provocative sculpture and human interaction with material and the natural world; the works of Hugh Hayden and Tom Sachs. Musical compositions and sound design which focus on situation and placement, for image and within space; sound artwork Filopendula (2021) by Brian Eno and the score of Deadman (Jarmusch, 1995) by Neil Young. Other artists that inspired the development of my project include Gary Webb’s sculptural works, El Lissitzky’s ‘Proun Room’ (1923), the performances and boundaries pushed by Chris Burden, and Thessian Machado’s ambient work in sound.
My piece comprised a wooden box constructed out of 3⁄4” structural plywood and a musical composition that encompassed the space surrounding the structure. The durability of material is an essential aspect of creation and the ability to realize artwork. Plywood is constructed from wood veneers stacked and glued to produce a solid sheet. The material is incredibly durable and utilizes altering cross-grain patterns to support weight across and along the grain on the visible sheet. Structural plywood is used for wall and roof bracings, beams, and hoardings. Coated by a mirage of other materials, the average person often overlooks its importance in construction. I chose to use plywood as my medium for the sculpture of this project to highlight its significance in the post-modern world, both in construction and allowing for individual creativity. The use of wood, metal, canvas, clay, concrete, paint, tools, instruments, and spaces allows for art that we admire as a collective global culture to be released from the minds of great artists as material, sonic, and written work.
